Coats Opti zips introduces new product for outdoor goods

  • 03 Jul 2013

World leading industrial thread and consumer textile crafts business Coats plc introduces a new product to the Coats Opti zips range – Coats Opti Total Plastic (TP) zips.

Environmental conditions such as humidity, salt water, wind and sun light can have a detrimental effect on metal sliders, causing them to corrode and the zips used in outdoor goods to malfunction.

Coats Opti TP zips provide a solution to the problem of deterioration as they are made with plastic sliders, making them durable and corrosion resistant, ensuring a high puller strength when put under pressure.

The range provides the best solution for outdoor technical applications such as marine equipment and outdoor gear, including boat covers, life vests and jackets, buoyancy aids, diving vests, military goods, tents and awnings.

Coats Opti TP zips also include enhanced features, such as Coats HydroS treatment – an exclusive specially developed water repellent chemical which is applied to zips to avoid water passing through the tape, stopping the fabric from rotting.  Other features include resistance to sunlight, UV radiation and colour fade.

Wider textile tapes also ensure there is sufficient room for the specialist stitching needed to securely fasten the zips to the stiff and heavy fabrics used in outdoor and marine goods.

Frazer Smith, Chief Commercial Officer, Coats plc, said: ‘Coats Opti TP zips demonstrate our continued commitment to developing products that are tailored to our customers’ varied and diverse needs as we strive to meet the most important requirements for zips used in outdoor goods.  Total plastic zips provide a practical solution to the problem of corrosion caused by the elements and is yet another example of Coats’ varied portfolio of apparel, footwear and specialty thread, yarn and zip innovations.’

About Coats Opti Total Plastic (T PT) Range

The Opti P TP zips range currently consists of three products:

  • P80 Auto-lock slider – auto-lock plastic sliders are necessary for products where the zip should be locked, such as life vests or where wind can unzip the product by accident.  The auto-lock slider contains a metal internal locking spring, but this is not affected by corrosion
  • P80 TP Pin-lock slider – pin-lock sliders have a locking mechanism attached to the puller.  This slider locks when the locking mechanism is engaged by manually pressing the puller. The pin-lock slider is primarily used in military and outdoor goods
  • P80 TP Non-lock slider – non-lock sliders are suitable for products where no additional force to the zip is applied during use
