Interchangeable zips are required when an open end zip is separated and it cannot be guaranteed that the original two zip halves will return back together.

A mattress with interchangeable zips can be connected alternatively between different covers, for example a summer / winter cover. The exchangeability makes it possible to assemble the different zip halves together.
Interchangeable zips on covers are well suited to hospital beds, where laundry is done on a daily basis. The cover is washable as half the cover fits into 2.5kg standard washing machine.
