Coats launches cost effective fibreglass coated yarn for telecom cables

  • 28 Nov 2014

Coats plc, the world’s leading industrial thread and consumer textile crafts business, launches Glasmo SM VO - a new fibreglass coated yarn designed for use in telecommunication cables.  Its unique adhesion properties and inherent strength reduces cable manufacturing costs by eliminating one of the processes in cable production.

Glasmo SM VO’s oval shaped cross section increases the surface area of the yarn, and its uniquely engineered chemistry promotes the adhesion between the glass fibre components and the PVC cable jacket.  This combination eliminates the need for a preheating process which therefore streamlines production and reduces cable manufacturing costs.  The coating process also increases the strength and stability of the glass fibre, meaning that smaller cables using less PVC for the jacket can be produced while still meeting strength specifications, which further reduces the manufacturing cost of the final cable.

Rajiv Sharma, Global CEO, Industrial Division, Coats plc, said: ‘Glasmo SM VO is another example of the innovation in our Speciality business.  We are continuing to develop high technology products with enhanced strength and performance features which are providing cost savings and benefits for our customers.’

Glasmo SM VO is for use in drop wire telecommunication cables including copper, fibre optic, shielded and coaxial cables.  It can be produced to customer specifications as required.
