Sweaters

We offer a range of sewing threads for knitwear which have high seam strength and elongation as well as provide comfort.

Polyester corespun thread is recommended, but, occasionally on wool or cotton garments, there is a requirement for the sewing thread used in creating Cut & Sew knitwear to have less lustre. Where this is the case, a polyester/cotton sewing thread can be substituted in the corresponding tex sizes.

On overlock, chainstitch and coverseaming operations, the under thread may be substituted for Gramax if a greater degree of seam covering is required.

Approximate thread consumption is 60 metres. Depending on required final quality, alternative thread types may be used. Thread size will determine needle size.

    Disclaimer

The sewing thread recommendations laid out above are intended as a guide to aid the construction of garments with good quality seams. As garments of the same generic type differ in terms of fabric substrate and construction, and both making up methods and post make up processing can greatly vary, these recommendations should be viewed as a good starting point for thread selection.

Knitwear can be divided into two distinct sections:

    • Fully fashioned , which mainly uses the same yarns for making as the fabric is constructed from and therefore, relatively little sewing thread.
    • Cut and sew , to which the table refers to

The main factors to consider when selecting the sewing thread are:

    • The demands of the stitching operation
    • The amount of load / demand placed on the seam
    • The type and weight of fabric being sewn
    • Any post make up processing such as, shrink resist finishing

Coverseaming on Cut & Sew Knitwear may involve the following stitch types:

    • 406 - Twin needle coverseam
    • 407 - Three needle coverseam

They are generally only used for attaching stolls to cardigans. The recommendations in the table above apply to both of these stitch types.
